Job Title

Healthcare Imaging Assistant

Reporting to: Radiology Imaging Lead


Working as part of a team & under the overall guidance of the Radiographers to provide an effective and efficient radiology service.

Maintain high levels of skills, judgement, initiative, professional knowledge and sensitivity

Maintain high standards of Health and Safety in line with current H&S Codes and policies

Carry out other work and duties as workload may require

Have a full working knowledge and understanding of radiology investigations, information systems and the bookings protocols.


On a day to day basis assisting radiographers / radiologists in the course of their work and via liaison with patients / secretarial staff.

Liaise with Radiologists / Radiographers to ensure smooth, efficient service to patients and customers.

To communicate in a concise and appropriate manner, complex information regarding procedures to other hospital staff, patients and relatives.

To be able to provide reassurance and overcome patient concerns and barriers to understanding in order to obtain the level of co-operation required to achieve a successful outcome to procedures.

To be responsible for the correct care and use of equipment and resources generally throughout the department but with a particular emphasis on the specialist equipment used in radiology.

Preparation of next day work lists, ultrasound/MRI lists and setting up procedure trolleys

To assist with ordering of stock and ensuring rooms are fully stocked and ready for use before every session

To be responsible for entering pre-determined clinical data and such additional, professional observations as may be appropriate onto computer based systems such as the Radiology Information System (RIS) or Compucare.

To have a flexible approach to working hours and be prepared to participate fully in shifts, extended working day and on-call working rotas and schedules as may be required.

To be required to carry out duties appropriate to role and grade in any area of the Radiology departments if exceptional circumstances make this necessary.

Be prepared to participate in on-going audit activities within the radiology department and to suggest appropriate subjects for such activities for consideration by the Head of Radiology and Superintendent Radiographers.

To contribute to and work within a safe working environment.

To attend and participate in departmental meetings as deemed necessary by the Head of Radiology and Superintendent Radiographers.

To take part in regular performance appraisals.

Maintain equipment and waiting area to highest standards.

The post holder is expected to comply with Aspen Infection Control Policies and conduct him/herself at all times in such a manner as to minimise the risk of healthcare associated infection.

Ensure untoward incidents, technical and equipment problems are reported.

  • Greet patients in a welcoming friendly manner, book patients into the department, confirming records of the patient details are accurate and up to date ensuring amendments are made on RIS/Compucare where necessary in real time.

Book appointments in person, via telephone and post. Ensure the correct appointment letter processed indicating correct examination preparations.

Have a clear understanding of appointment procedures with knowledge of each individual consultant speciality.

Inform patient with accurate instructions regarding examination prep (to attend with a full bladder / fasting) answering and seeking answers to any concerns.

Advise patients in a professional manner on sensitive issues such as LMP dates (10 day rules / menstrual cycles)

Direct patients to the appropriate waiting area and ensure patients are given appropriate instructions for their radiology examinations. Monitoring of patients in waiting area.

At times referrals require some investigation to confirm whether a patient may need special assistance. This is considered when booking a room / consultant.

To undertake any other duties not specified within the job description as determined by the Radiology Imaging Lead.

Display excellent communication skills, act in a professional manner with sensitivity and discretion both in person and on the telephone often communicating with emotional patients/relatives using judgement and experience

Maintain a strong professional working relationship with radiography staff, administrators, consultant radiologists and hospital staff often being put on the spot to find solutions for urgent patients and queries.

Train new staff on appointment systems and monitor quality of training in conjunction with senior staff.
