Editorial Assistant (Journals), Mathematics, Physical and Applied Sciences

London, Berlin, Heidelberg or New York

Purpose of the Role

The Editorial Assistant’s primary role will be to provide support to the journal editorial team in managing and developing a portfolio of journal titles in the Mathematics, Physical and Applied Sciences portfolio. You will be responsible for managing payments to Editors-in-Chief, preparing journal contracts, helping with author queries and be responsible for content management within our internal databases as well as the journal homepages on SN websites. As a key part of the editorial team, you will be expected to develop a knowledge of the journal portfolio, as well as a wider knowledge of developments in academic publishing.

Responsibilities

  • Arrange payments to Editors-in-Chief and societies
  • Prepare new contracts for Editors and societies
  • Update internal databases and manage the journal homepages on SN websites
  • Formulate twice yearly newsletters to editorial board members
  • Perform market research when required using external databases
  • Manage journal subscriptions
  • Other duties as required

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Experience:

  • Previous work experience would be an advantage

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Word and Outlook, plus additional database software
  • Knowledge of journal publishing processes and related matters, and understanding of and interest in open access publishing
  • Highly customer-focused, with excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
  • Strong time management, prioritization and organizational skills; including proven ability to take ownership to drive and complete tasks, to consistently meet deadlines, and adapt quickly to change
  • Excellent critical appraisal, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail/high accuracy, proven high level of computer literacy

Desirable:

  • An interest in academic research

Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level within a relevant scientific area
