About this opportunity

We are looking to recruit an experienced Estimator with experience in the Rail and Infrastructure sectors to join or team in London.

Gleeds Rail is the division of Gleeds dedicated to the provision of a comprehensive consultancy service to the Rail sectors.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Estimating for all stages of development of transportation projects, particularly heavy and light rail and highways works.
  • Estimating for both CAPEX and OPEX, including Whole Life Costing.
  • Developing a database of rates for transportation projects.
  • Benchmarking and maintaining/updating benchmarking data.
  • Developing and maintaining contacts with Clients across the transportation sector to grow the business.
  • Risk and value management.
  • In-depth understanding of elemental, top down, bottom up and first principles estimating and technical knowledge (particularly within the heavy/light/underground/ rail sectors including tram systems).
  • Supply chain engagement.
  • Detailed knowledge of using estimating tools such as CostX and Candy.
  • Measurement and production of measured quantities from drawings or BIM models
  • Identification and the recording of potential project risks.
  • Attend and participate in risk reduction workshops (when/if required).
  • Attend design review meetings (when/if required).
  • Good knowledge of Autodesk AutoCad Civil 3D; MS Office; MS Project; Primavera P6.
  • Working knowledge of NEC 3 & 4 Contracts, JCT 2016 Contracts and NR Forms of Contract.
  • Detailed knowledge of RMM, NRM, SMM7, CESSM4 and MMHW method of measurements.
  • Good understanding of the management and control process for delivering projects on an operational railway.
  • Experience of collaborative working to identify optimum solutions and deliver value for money.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and good negotiation skills.
  • You should have excellent technical knowledge and be client facing and have the appropriate business acumen to succeed in a competitive environment.

About You

Who we’re looking for:

The position requires the candidates to work in both Gleeds and client offices and may also require being site based.

You will be able to work in a Client facing role and develop relationships within the industry and have a forward-thinking approach with the ability to develop client relationships.

Experience, Knowledge and Key Skills

Candidates will have a broad spectrum of technical knowledge relating to Estimating.

In addition to having the following skills, candidates personal and communication skills, ambition, drive and energy will be considered important to be successful:

  • A proven track record of estimating and cost management in the Infrastructure sector.
  • A thorough understanding of the estimating process.
  • A proven track record of all around estimating and cost management in the Infrastructure sector.
  • Heavy, Light Rail and Highways experience is desirable.
  • Good general construction knowledge.
  • Relevant experience in a similar role.
  • Good understanding of the management and control process for delivering projects on an operational railway.
  • Temporary diversions and infrastructure upgrades to network rail assets.
  • Local station and ticket hall refurbishments and new builds.
  • Highways and pedestrian access bridges over existing railway assets.
  • Small works negotiations with Main and specialist subcontractors.
  • A contracting background.
  • Utilities C2 to C9 Process.
  • You will have excellent leadership skills and be a team-player.
  • The ability to build relationships both with internal management teams and externally with key client stakeholders.
  • Conversant with estimating systems and being pro-active.
  • Ability to work efficiently in order to meet client deadlines.


  • Ideally you should be degree/HNC qualified.
  • Ideally MRICS or pursuing APC.
  • Ideally MCIOB or pursuing membership.
  • Ideally AcostE or pursuing membership.
