This role will lead the Big Tech Strategic Engagement Unit.

The Big Tech Strategic Engagement Unit manages the Government’srelationship with the world’s most powerful technology companies.

The Unit works extensively across Whitehall to create a strategic and coordinated approach to the Government's relationship with the biggest tech companies, fulfil partnership opportunities and deliver against the needs and demands of this hugely exciting portfolio of companies.

The team is friendly, highly motivated and effective, with staff drawn from analytical, strategic and policy backgrounds both from within and outside the Civil Service. The role will be both policy and engagement focused. You will be responsible for setting the strategic approach of the Unit, as well as ensuring that resources are appropriately allocated across the breadth of the Unit's work.

The role involves combining excellent stakeholder management skills (both internal and external), with creative problem-solving and policy making.

The role is fast-paced and challenging - the candidate should have strong evidence of strategic thinking, successfully leading teams under pressure, as well as working at pace. We work closely with a diverse range of people in DCMS and wider government - the candidate should feel experienced at quickly building strong relationships and working with external stakeholders.



  • Cross cutting policy - organising and delivering a coordinated cross-Whitehall prosperity and regulatory effort with the companies, working
closely with other government departments and building strong relationships to influence and shape policy outcomes.
  • Set strategic approach of the Unit across the pillars of stakeholder engagement, cross whitehall collaboration and developing expertise.
  • Lead approach in team to Cross-Whitehall communications - including profile raising across Whitehall including Cabinet Office and No10 and engagement with the virtual team of representatives across Government.
  • Key point of engagement with the companies - ensuring regular and focused engagements are scheduled between the Unit and the companies.
  • Line management of 2 Band As and oversight of 3 Band Bs.
Essential Requirements
  • Strong and well evidenced leadership skills and line management experience - evidence of motivating and developing staff.
  • Ambitious, analytical and strategic: always seeing the big picture, and focusing on delivering impact.
  • Evidence of running large ambitious programmes with tight resources. Hyper-organised and be able to deliver at pace, using initiative including when faced with only limited information.
  • Substantial policy experience and knowledge of how Government works, including a comprehensive understanding policy
mechanisms and levers and excellent track record of working on complex policy issues at pace, and an ability to hit the ground
  • Exceptional engagement and relationship building skills, in order to build a network while fairly and diplomatically balancing the needs
of other government departments and companies.
  • Resilient when faced with challenges, and flexible to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience working on issues in the Tech Sector, connected to Big Tech.
