The role

To provide high quality statistical analysis and analytical support and assist with the delivery of the Actuarial Reserving Team’s objectives.

Key accountabilities
To support the quarterly reserving exercise, including:
  • Developing an understanding of relevant data sources and systems
  • Completing quarterly reserving exercise for assigned lines of business
  • Presenting findings where appropriate
  • Help improve the reserving process
  • Answering queries from key stakeholders on reserving results
  • Preparing Solvency II analysis
  • Drafting reserving reports
  • Document the reserving analyses performed
  • Preform Research, Analyse and report to more senior actuaries on reserving issues, claim trends, mix of business changes and key risks and uncertainties.
  • Support the business planning process as required
  • Support ad hoc requests from the underwriting teams and other functions for data and information.
  • Assist Risk Management and Capital Modelling by supplying appropriate information

Skills & experience
  • Completion and attainment of an honours degree, ideally with mathematical content
  • Demonstrate progress towards Actuarial exam qualifications

Software / Programming Skills

  • Knowledge of MS Excel (essential)
  • VBA (very desirable)
  • SQL (very desirable)
  • Awareness of reserving software (desirable)

Technical Actuarial / Statistical Skills

  • Knowledge of actuarial techniques for reserving commercial insurance
  • Familiarity with jargon and practices in the Commercial Lines Insurance market

Other skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate statistical and actuarial output to underwriters and other non-actuarial stakeholders using appropriate language
  • Willing to take on responsibility and deliver to deadlines
  • Ability to coach, explain and delegate work to more junior members of the team including those in outsourced locations
  • Proactive and efficient
  • Ensure quality and reasonableness checking of own work, including appropriate layout and documentation of data used, assumptions made and calculated results selected.
  • Ability to work using own initiative as well as part of a team
  • Demonstrate interest, knowledge and enthusiasm for the role and the general insurance industry.
