AXA XL is one of the Leading Insurers in the world for this class of business with more than 50% of the book of business is Lead. The Senior Adjuster Role will have a portfolio of only Lead Business, primary in the Upstream space, however as a member of the Energy and Construction (E&C) team you will be responsible for the negotiation and management of Energy claims of varying sub-classes within defined authority levels. The portfolio of claims will range across Upstream, Downstream, Power, Construction, Renewables and Liabilities.

The role will require claims leadership for often complex and large losses within the global insurance market for the respective Line of business, provide training and mentoring to junior members of the claims team, an ambassador for the company at industry events and providing thought leadership within the respective lines of business, liaising with brokers, external experts and many internal functions. A key role is to support the underwriters and be a part of business development, including face to face meetings with Clients in addition to the reporting and handling of claims.

Personal claims handling authority (the ability to commit the company to payments) will be commensurate with experience and will be reviewed on a regular basis.

The role will be based in the London (and will follow a standard 35 hour working week which is typically Monday to Friday (9-5) working pattern, however, we are happy to discuss flexibility on this as appropriate.

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Handle and manage a portfolio of Energy and Construction claims, some of which will be following other insurance companies with the majority being in a lead / agreement party capacity. Due to the complex nature of losses within this sector Most claims will fall below the team member’s personal authority, as set out in the individuals Personal Authority Statement. Cases involving more complex issues or high values will need closer liaison with Senior Technical / Practice leaders, although you will maintain responsibility for the day to day management of the claim.

  • Close liaison with Underwriters and engineers, operating as a fully integrated business unit across Energy in order to coordinate business development, meetings with key clients, risk review and assessment of losses.

Claims Management


  • Competent and efficient handling of all aspects of claims within positions authority to high technical standards and quality including:
    • Legal and policy liability assessment,
    • Quantum analysis, reserving
    • Establishing handling strategy to successfully manage claims from first notice of loss to closure
    • Negotiation, settlement and defence including litigation management.
  • Receiving claims notifications, assessing estimates and negotiating claims up to and including settlement within personal authority. Considering Third Party liabilities, detecting fraud and taking correct action to preserve and maximise recoveries.
  • Competent and efficient handling of claims above personal authority under referral system.
  • Instructing and controlling surveyors, loss adjusters, solicitors and experts in connection with day-to-day claims handling.
  • Management of claims where AXA XL are predominantly sole/lead insurer and not follow.
  • Active involvement in the maintenance and development of client relationships through contacts with clients and brokers in respect of day-to-day claims handling. Understanding and acting appropriately in respect of clients’ needs.
  • Act as a referral point for less experienced members of staff, providing mentoring/guidance as appropriate.

  • Represent AXA XL on a number of Market Committees/Business within the Market for respective lines of business, such as LMA.

  • Undertake work on any other task carried out within the Claims dept. as may be required.

  • Liaison with other stakeholders including Underwriters, Finance and Actuarial as appropriate.

Customer Relationship Management

  • Promote quality claims service including effective handling of claims and compliance with required service standards. Maintain and build on existing customer relationships and encourage business retention through contacts with clients and brokers in respect of day-to-day claims handling.

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:

  • Technical understanding of Offshore Operations and Technology;
    • Platform types, FPSO’s, subsea systems and down hole (well) design and formations,
    • Contractual relationships of Joint Operating Agreements and Drilling Contracts.
    • In depth experience of unique coverages provided in Upstream Energy;
    • Operational Property, Operators Extra Expense (OEE) and Loss of Production Income (LOPI),
    • Construction (WELCAR),
    • Drilling Contractors – Control of Well (CoW) and Loss of Hire (LoH).

  • Ability to Lead the Market on large losses, provide support to Underwriters and be at ease discussing claims issues direct with our clients.

  • Familiarity with both Lloyd’s and Market systems/protocols.

  • Understanding of the principles of insurance including considering policy liability, terms and relevant clauses, preferably from a claims background, however, other technical insurance experience will be considered.
  • Understanding of legal liability (including common law and statute) and the legal process (including litigation)

Other skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to operate to tight deadlines in a pressured environment.
  • Capable analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good numerical and literacy skills (Minimum GCSE passes Mathematics and English).
  • Good PC and systems skills (relevant AXA XL systems, MS Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint).
  • Good telephone, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Motivated, open to change, good team skills.
